Manuka honey is a unique natural product that has been tested and reported to offer fantastic health benefits including superior treatment for skin conditions and wounds. Honey has been used for thousands of years because of its antibacterial properties, but recent research at the University of Waikato New Zealand and hospitals around the world have identified UMF Manuka Honey as something very special.
UMF Manuka honey is produced by bees that collect nectar and pollen from the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) found in uncultivated areas throughout New Zealand. Many honeys have some degree of anti bacterial activity due to the presence of hydrogen peroxide, a well known antiseptic, however Professor Peter Molan MBE of the University of Waikato is reported to have discovered an antibacterial property in ‘Active’ Manuka that other honeys don’t have – known as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).
The Unique Manuka Factor has been used for many applications for human well being, an aid to digestion, skin care, wound dressing – and of course the enjoyment of just eating Manuka!
Active Manuka honey with a rating of at least 10+ can be UMF certified and Apicare® use UMF 16+ in all their honey skincare range.
